Eucalyptus cordata
Common name: Heart-leaved Silver Gum
Eucalyptus cordata, also known as the Heart-leaved Silver Gum, is an evergreen tree that is native to Tasmania. It can be found in the south-east of the island, growing at intermediate altitudes like on the foothills of Mount Wellington, in the Snug Plains, and around Port Arthur and Moogara.
This tree is prized for its attractive, glaucous juvenile leaves, which often remain on the crown.
Eucalyptus cordata can grow to impressive heights of 3 to 25 meters and a spread of 3 to 4 meters in its natural habitat. However, it typically reaches a more moderate height of 3 to 10 meters and a spread of 3 to 4 meters.
Eucalyptus cordata flourishes in well-drained soils, particularly those with loamy or loamy-clay textures. Proper drainage is crucial to preventing waterlogging, which can damage the tree's well-being.
This species is versatile when it comes to pH, but generally thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soils with an optimal pH range of 6.0-6.5. Regularly testing the soil's pH can help maintain ideal growing conditions for Eucalyptus cordata.
It is well-suited for temperate climates and prefers regions with moderate to cool summers. It can handle varying levels of annual rainfall and exhibits good drought tolerance once mature.
Additionally, this species is relatively cold-resistant and can withstand light frosts, making it adaptable to different environments.
Full sun is recommended for optimal growth, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Adequate sunlight is essential for healthy development and the signature heart-shaped leaves. While partial shade may be tolerated,
