Common name: Fern-leaved Banksia, Groundcover Banksia, Southern Blechnum Banksia, and Blechnum Banksia.

0.5high, 2-4m wide.

Prostrate and elegant, Banksia blechnifolia luxuriously spreads its horizontal branches up to 2-3m in length.

In the spring and early summer, the dusky rose-red flowers emerge, appearing as though they are rising from the very earth they grow in.

This adaptable plant thrives in sandy topsoil of 40-50cm, and its specific name derives from its fern-like leaves.

Part of a family of prostrate shrubs with tough, upright leaves, B. blechnifolia boasts striking red-brown flower spikes that reach up to 20 centimetres in height, blooming from September to November.

As the spikes mature, they transform into grey, woody seed pods, attracting a variety of pollinating insects such as bees, wasps, ants, and flies.

Indigenous to the sandy soils near Lake King in the south coastal region of Western Australia, B. blechnifolia regenerates through seed after bushfires and thrives as a ground cover or for rockeries.
