Eucalyptus caesia ssp magna
Common name: Silver Princess
Eucalyptus caesia ssp magna, also known as the Silver Princess, is a mallee tree admired by many.
Its impressive height of up to 14 meters is adorned with silvery pendulous branches, blue-grey/mid-green leaves, and 'minni-ritchi' bark that peels in small flakes.
The stems and flower buds are coated with a white powdery bloom, adding to its silver appearance, thus earning its common name.
In autumn and winter, the tree is adorned with large, stunning flowers that range from pink to red, with white-flowered variations also present.
These blooms are a favorite among nectar-feeding birds, making it a perfect addition to any garden. Once the flowering season is over, the tree produces large, urn-shaped 'gumnuts' that come in varying colors of waxy white and shiny red, adding to its allure as a decorative feature.
Once fully established, it can withstand drought conditions. The lignotuber feature allows for drastic pruning if needed, as this species has the ability to regrow from its base.
While often used for ornamental purposes, Eucalyptus caesia ssp magna is considered a Priority species in the wild due to its rarity and lack of identifiable threats.
