Eucalyptus Microcarpa produces buds during summer, followed by flowers two months later. While most grey box trees have a single trunk, some have multiple stems due to increased epicormic growth caused by grazing disturbance in the juvenile stage. Though it prefers clay-loam soil for optimal growth, E. microcarpa can also tolerate alkaline soil. It can withstand frost, wind, and poor drainage, but not deep sand. In windbreaks, the spreading crown provides medium-level coverage and shade. Regular budding makes it a good nectar source for bees, which collect cream-colored pollen.

Indigenous Eucalyptus Microcarpa boasts a pale, durable, and dense timber with a density of 1100 kg/m3. This premium timber is harvested in Qld and has a variety of commercial uses, from heavy engineering construction to furniture making. It also serves as a reliable fuel source. E. microcarpa's abundant flowers attract a wide range of wildlife, including Sugar Gliders, Squirrel Gliders, and native birds and insects. The tree's hollows also provide important nesting and refuge sites for native birds and mammals.
