Very dense small-leaved evergreen, with dark green glossy, leathery leaves which give off an unusual sweet smell. Slow growing but will, if left unclipped, form a large shrub, it is also shade tolerant. Box has traditionally been used for topiary and formal hedging work. Will grow in most soils. Plant at a rate of five plants per metre.
To help your box hedge get away to a good start incorporate compost. Mulch around the sapling leaving a good couple of inches around the stem to ensure good air circulation.
