Chorizema ilicifolium, also known as holly flame pea, is a member of the Fabaceae family and is indigenous to the southern coast of Western Australia.

It is a slim, upright or spreading shrub with thorny, oval to lance-shaped leaves and vibrant yellow-orange and red pea-shaped flowers.

Chorizema is an exclusive genus with approximately 18 species, all except one found in the southwest of Australia.

These plants are generally small shrubs with striking red and orange flowers, earning them the common name of "flame pea".

The flowers consist of 4 petals - the "standard", the "keel", and two "wings" as depicted in the diagram.

These plants, along with Acacia, are often pioneer species that quickly germinate after fires to stabilize the soil and provide nitrogen (as they are legumes capable of "fixing" nitrogen from the air in nodules on their roots).

C.ilicifolium is a small, spreading shrub with deeply lobed, prickly-toothed leaves. This species is similar to the commonly grown C.cordatum and both are known for their relatively large, brightly colored flowers.

While C.ilicifolium can tolerate some humidity, it thrives in drier climates and performs best in well-drained soils with consistent moisture.

While it can survive light frost, it is not suited for areas with moderate to heavy frost. Additionally, providing some protection from full sun can prevent sunburn on the flowers. Overall, this species is a great choice for those looking to add a touch of color to their landscaping.
