Angophora costata
Common name: Sydney red gum, Rusty gum or Smooth-barked apple.
10-30m high x 5-15m wide.
The twisted trunk and stunning, velvety orange bark make this a perfect choice for showcasing in grand settings like public parks or expansive private gardens.
Angophora costata is a native Australian tree known for its unique, smooth bark that starts out pinkish or orange-brown and transforms into a silvery grey as it ages.
It thrives in sandy, impoverished soil and requires minimal upkeep once established.
Its elongated leaves grow in pairs along the branches and are complemented by white or creamy white flowers in the spring months of October to December.
The flower buds typically appear in groups of three, followed by ribbed, oval or bell-shaped fruit.
Angophora costata is commonly found in sandy soil and is often seen growing over sandstone, naturally occurring in Queensland and New South Wales. It is widely distributed in south-eastern Queensland and has a disjointed presence in White Mountains National Park. In New South Wales, it is most commonly seen in coastal regions extending from Coffs Harbour to Narooma and as far west as the Blue mountains.
