Ceratonia siliqua
Common name: Carob tree
15m
Ceratonia siliqua, also known as the carob tree, is a blooming evergreen tree or shrub that thrives in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern climates.
It is highly coveted for its delectable fruit, resembling seed pods, and is often cultivated as both a source of food and a stunning addition to gardens and landscapes.
With Portugal leading the way, carob production is also prominent in Italy and Morocco, making it a treasured commodity.
When the trees blossom in autumn, the flowers are small and numerous, they are pollinated by both wind and insects.
Carob trees are capable of withstanding extended periods of drought, although they require 500 to 550 millimetres of rainfall each year in order to produce fruit.
They thrive in well-drained, sandy loam soils, but are intolerant of waterlogging, although their deep root systems allow them to adapt to a variety of soil types and they are relatively tolerant of salt levels up to 3% in the soil.
With the possibility of renewal during winter rainfalls, carob trees can potentially recover from being irrigated with saline water during the summer. It is frost-tolerant to roughly −7 °C .
