Common names: Swamp she-oak, Swamp buloke, Marsh sheoak, Grey she-oak, Native pine or Guman by the Gadigal people.

8-20m

Casuarina glauca is endemic to the eastern coast of Australia.

This sophisticated and exclusive dioecious tree is known for its fissured, scaly bark, and drooping branchlets.

The leaves are reduced to scales in whorls, while the fruit contains winged seeds.

Standing at a height of 8-20m (26-66ft), sometimes growing up to 35m (115ft), this tree can also be found in shrub form, reaching up to 2m (6ft 7in).

Populations of this elegant species can be seen along Australia's east coast, from central Queensland to southern New South Wales, with some dating back to pre-European settlement.

However, due to habitat clearing for development, this species is at risk along the New South Wales coastline.

Casuarina glauca thrives in brackish waters along the banks of rivers and estuaries.

Its root system allows for dense clusters of trees to form, contributing to the tree's regal appearance.

Originating from alluvial soils of sandstone or shale, this magnificent tree stands tall with the water table remaining only 30 cm under the surface.

Its purpose goes beyond beauty, as it also aids in reducing erosion and collects materials at its roots, gradually turning shallows into land.

Following a fire, the tree regenerates by sprouting from its roots while cut stumps produce vigorous suckers, giving way to new groves of trees.

This species is known to drop a significant amount of litter, including old cones and branchlets, enriching the soil with nitrogen.
