Common name: Silky cytisus, Tagasaste, Tree lucerne

1-7m

Native to the Mediterranean region, specifically the Canary Islands, Chamaecytisus palmensis has been widely cultivated as a fodder shrub and for land rehabilitation, while also making an occasional appearance in gardens as an ornamental.

It is now naturalized in southern Australia, including areas like south-eastern Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, and parts of South Australia and Western Australia.

Additionally, it can be found overseas in countries like New Zealand, where it has become widely naturalized.

This species thrives in temperate, semi-arid, and sub-tropical regions, growing along roadways, pastures, grasslands, heathlands, disturbed sites, and even around old dwellings.

It typically takes the form of an upright shrub or small tree, growing anywhere from 1 to 6 meters tall, with drooping branches that are soft and hairy. Its leaves, up to 7 centimeters long, are composed of three elongated leaflets

Chamaecytisus palmensis, also known as tagasaste or tree lucerne, belongs to the Fabaceae family.

Its delicate flowers bloom during the late winter and early spring, providing vital sustenance for bees when other plants are dormant. With its stunning floral displays and a flowering period of up to four months, tagasaste is a sought-after multi-function plant.

It serves as a valuable source of high protein fodder for livestock, pollen for bees, shade and shelter for animals and plants, and even contributes to soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.

This resilient plant also excels in challenging environments such as drought-prone areas and dry hill country, thanks to its impressive root system that extends over 10 metres.

With moderate frost tolerance and resistance to fire, tagasaste is a versatile and in-demand addition to any landscape.
