Common name: Goosefoot

2m

From the Greek word 'chen' meaning goose and 'pod' meaning foot, comes the name Chenopodium, a reference to the unique shape of its leaves in certain species.

The species name, Nitrariaceum, alludes to its resemblance to the genus Nitraria.

Distribution: Chenopodium nitrariaceum is commonly found in north-eastern South Australia, thriving in heavy alluvial soils near the Murray River and its surrounding floodplains.

It can also be found in all mainland States.

Status: This species is native to Australia and is particularly abundant in South Australia and other states.

Plant description: This shrub boasts divaricately branched, spinescent stems that can reach up to 2 meters in height.

The leaves are alternate and often clustered, and range from spathulate to linear in shape, measuring up to 5 cm long and 5 mm wide.

This luxurious spiny shrub boasts a distinctive greyish color and is characterized by its slender branches and thick, vibrant green leaves.

It is a perennial species that thrives in heavy alluvial or clay soils found in floodplains, river flats, and low-lying areas that may experience occasional inundation.

With a remarkable tolerance for both drought and salinity, and the ability to withstand extended periods of complete inundation, this native plant is truly exceptional.

Its flowering season typically spans from February to August, although it can be observed blooming all year round.
