Common name: Tangled lignum or Simply lignum
Duma florulenta (also known as Muehlenbeckia florulenta) is a native Australian plant often referred to as tangled lignum or simply lignum.
It is typically found in wetlands, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas prone to cyclical flooding and drying.
The plant's Wiradjuri name is gweeargal, while it is known as Kirinykiriny or Kurinykuriny in Walmajarri.
This perennial, dioecious shrub grows up to 2.5 m tall and forms dense thickets with its tangled branches and branchlets, making it a dominant species in its habitat.
Its small, cream to yellowish flowers bloom in clusters throughout most of the year.
While it may appear leafless at times, Lignum (syn. Muehlenbeckia) is a resilient plant with a deep root system that reaches at least 3 meters below the surface.
Its ability to tolerate salinity and drought makes it a valuable indicator for dryland soil conditions. Furthermore, its tangled growth pattern provides a secure haven for native wildlife in various habitats throughout Australia. From floodplains to swamps and gilgais, this plant thrives in intermittently flooded areas and is a testament to its adaptability.
