Callistemon viminalis
Common name: Weeping bottlebrush, Creek bottlebrush - ( Some herbaria use the name Melaleuca viminalis)
10m
This plant is a member of the myrtle family Myrtaceae and is usually found in New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia.
It is a substantial shrub or tree with firm bark, drooping foliage, and a profusion of vibrant red bottlebrush flowers from spring to summer.
In gardens around the world, it is one of the most commonly cultivated Callistemons / melaleucas, and its various cultivars are highly prized.
It typically grows to 10 meters (30 feet) tall, with several trunks, fibrous bark, and branches that sway gracefully.
The showy red flowers bloom primarily from September to December but may also appear at various times throughout the year.
This species has adapted to thrive in and near waterways, particularly in sandstone and granite areas.
The hardiness of Callistemon viminalis makes it an ideal choice for stabilizing riverbanks and preventing erosion. Its strong root system slows flood currents and helps maintain high water quality.
This tree, also known as Melaleuca viminalis, is popular for both home gardens and as a street tree.
It can thrive in most soil types, as long as it receives plenty of sunlight.
While it does require regular watering, it can withstand periods of drought when fully mature. However, this species is not tolerant of frost or salt spray.
